Beschreibung

The edition looks back over a turbulent year for solar supply chains, and we cast an eye ahead to the first big event of 2025: the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi in January. Though still a major fossil fuel producer, the Middle East region is also realizing its enormous solar potential, and many countries are taking steps to tap the area’s abundant space and high irradiance levels.
However, grid restrictions and a lack of sustainable long-term investment options are casting a shadow over the market. Oil-rich nations such as Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are funding their renewables transitions using sovereign wealth funds.
It’s an uphill battle for governments without resources to funnel into solar. That said, plenty of players are acting. In Jordan, domestic energy users are availing of rooftop solar thanks to a government-run tariff scheme, for example. The country has high public support for solar.

Other topics in this issue:

  • The 2 kV transition: The switch from 1.5 kV to 2 kV is gaining traction.
  • Greek transition testbed: The Greek island of Tilos boasts a holistic microgrid energy system.
  • Trump card: How will a Trump administration impact the United States’ Inflation Reduction Act?
  • Not OK, Computer: Automated fault detection for solar PV systems. How can it be done responsibly?
  • Frames of steel: Origami Solar talks replacing aluminum module frames with steel.
  • Rate innovation: Well-structured energy bills are essential to help households adopt new energy assets.
