Sunset for US incentives

The world is watching to see how the United States’ solar and energy storage markets will adapt to a newly challenging policy environment and the removal of key incentives. Over the past few weeks our US reporters caught up with people working in solar and energy storage companies to hear firsthand how their businesses expect to cope with plans for greatly reduced support for renewable energy, following the passing of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA).

Developers are racing to get projects up and running before federal investment and production tax credits dry up under the OBBBA’s expedited deadlines, and new import restrictions on Chinese components are a major concern. The energy storage industry is also bracing itself for turbulent times ahead, with large developers in particular feeling the pinch amid supply chain uncertainty.

Globally, solar needs optimism, especially as module prices are continuing to fall following a brief period of stabilization. This month, Martin Schachinger of pvXchange.com examines the market dynamics, pointing out the United States is not alone in creating a hostile policy environment for renewables. He argues that now is not the time for the industry to be complacent as worrying trends towards anti-climate policy spread through Europe and beyond.

Demonstrating how easy it is to integrate solar into our everyday surroundings is certainly one of the ways that we as an industry can try to stay one step ahead. This month, we take a deep dive into the world of integrated PV to find out how various players are incorporating solar into everything from heritage buildings and highway noise barriers to carports and agriculture. The future may be uncertain but with determination and people willing to think outside the box and innovate, solar will not falter.

Other topics in this issue:

  • Southeast Asia gains ground: Solar becomes a critical driver of energy diversification in the region.
  • Brazil bets big on batteries: A period of accelerated growth is nourishing the expansion of domestic battery production.
  • More than a flash: Standardized methods are needed to test perovskite cells and modules.
  • Deeper underground: Cornish Lithium is moving forward with plans to mine in the UK.
  • Idling in Detroit: The US state of Michigan, long known as the birthplace of the American auto, faces challenges as it sets its sights on electric vehicle manufacturing.
