The breadth of applications, pipeline of innovations and the commercial implications of battery energy storage systems (BESS) mean it’s well worth dedicating an entire edition to all things storage. At the utility scale, the BESS segment will be critical to renewables growth as electricity grid operators adapt to the increasing number of intermittent generators in their energy mix. With a global ramp-up of cell manufacturing capacity underway, we look at the progress being made on this promising technology, where much will depend on the balance of supply and demand.
