    Turning the corner

African countries are quietly laying the groundwork for a renewables revolution based around decentralized energy. Solar features heavily in these plans, which is unsurprising given much of the continent’s strong irradiance potential.
The development of minigrids will prove crucial to the long-term success of solar in many African communities. As Everoze’s Abdul Sotayo writes, homes and businesses that might otherwise have to rely on diesel generators to provide power can use more stable, green, and cost-effective methods such as rooftop solar connected to a local grid.

    Further upstream

Solar manufacturing is reaching a turning point in the United States and India, as both strive to strengthen domestic output and address supply chain gaps and planning mishaps.
India now hosts a well established module manufacturing capacity, and its push into the cell and wafer segment is gathering strength. And this domestic PV industry is increasingly supported by equally ambitious moves into the green hydrogen and energy storage supply chains as India’s energy transition continues to take shape.

    Moving in circles

As solar grows into a mainstream energy source for the whole world, there is an imperative for the industry to ensure sustainability is kept front and center. Managing the waste produced at every stage of PV manufacturing and deployment is central to this, and a focus topic for our September magazine.
Recycling presents an opportunity as well as a challenge, with companies specialized in site cleanups and decommissioning end-of-life systems an increasingly common sight, and big steps in retrieving value from those materials locked up in solar modules and batteries.

    Treasure Islands

This month, pv magazine turns its focus to islands in the energy transition. Within larger markets, island regions are already showing the way: Hawaii is moving forward with some of the most ambitious solar targets in the United States, and community energy models are reshaping the power supply in Spain’s Balearic and Canary Islands.
Other island regions are struggling. There are a lot of obstacles to overcome, including natural disasters, poor access to finance, skills shortages and low demand.

    Down to the wires

Solar is booming across Europe, but ageing grid infrastructure now creates significant pressure on project pipelines. Much of the architecture underpinning European electricity networks was designed with coal-fired power in mind – it’s no longer fit for purpose.
In the June edition of pv magazine global, we examine grid congestion across Europe and beyond. Growing curtailment, frustrating connection queues, the role of storage and the need for grid investment are all under the microscope as we take an in-depth look at one of the most pressing issues facing renewables today.

    Lighting the way

Perovskites are a frontrunner for the future of solar cell technology, and in this edition we explore the material’s prospects, according to the latest research. While few deny the game changing potential of the material, some see a disconnect between ongoing lab research and possible industrial applications, and are working to bring the two closer together.
We also look at some of the challenges associated with perovskite tandem modules. A timely topic given their position at the front of the commercialization queue.

    From the ground up

Community solar is already proving its worth in some markets by providing low-cost clean energy directly to consumers. In the April edition of pv magazine we look at promising community-solar marketplaces where deployment is being bolstered by supportive policies. In the United States, gigawatts of solar, developed and owned “by the people, for the people” is making a difference. We explore how supportive regulations, and a streamlined process can reshape the landscape for community solar, as consumers in Italy may soon discover.

    Material change:

    Is sodium-ion worth its salt?

The breadth of applications, pipeline of innovations and the commercial implications of battery energy storage systems (BESS) mean it’s well worth dedicating an entire edition to all things storage. At the utility scale, the BESS segment will be critical to renewables growth as electricity grid operators adapt to the increasing number of intermittent generators in their energy mix. For households, distributed storage could reshape the economics of rooftop solar in markets where net metering schemes are falling out of favor. Storage also represents a technological frontier where the solutions of the future will be determined by the careful balance of cost, supply and demand.

    Embracing change

Following a landmark COP28 in Dubai, 130 national governments have committed to tripling the world’s installed renewable energy generation capacity. The February edition of pv magazine global takes a look at how solar will power the transition – and asks how steps taken at the UAE conference might affect the global PV industry.
We sit down with COP28 CEO Adnan Z. Amin, formerly the Director General of IRENA, to hear his thoughts on how achievable the summit’s key renewables pledge really is, where the roadblocks to progress are, and how critical price declines will be to hitting 2030 generation targets.

    Tipping Point

The impact of oversupply is being felt throughout the PV value chain, raising big questions for industry and policymakers alike. Lagging demand isn’t exactly helping. But the solar marketplace has experienced similar cycles before and come out the other side.
Exploring how the current turbulence is impacting the PV supply chain is a focal point of this November edition of pv magazine, as is the innovation and ambition that characterizes a solar sector that thrives when solving problems.

    Harvest Potential

The solar industry is once again dealing with rapidly falling prices along the supply chain and unsold inventories piling up in warehouses across Europe in particular. How long this might last is difficult to predict, as multiple industry experts outline inside this month’s magazine. What is clear though is that to absorb the growing supply of PV modules, installations will need to accelerate, and innovative applications must be explored to integrate more solar energy both into landscapes and electrical grids.
