pv magazine Global covers the global PV industry and is published only in English.

Moving in circles

As solar grows into a mainstream energy source for the whole world, there is an imperative for the industry to ensure sustainability is kept front and center. Managing the waste produced at every stage of PV manufacturing and deployment is central to this, and a focus topic for our September magazine.
Recycling presents an opportunity as well as a challenge, with companies specialized in site cleanups and decommissioning end-of-life systems an increasingly common sight, and big steps in retrieving value from those materials locked up in solar modules and batteries.

Description

Ahead of the huge RE+ trade show coming to Anaheim this month, we also look to the United States, where court cases in several regions promise to force action on climate change and push faster deployment of solar and other clean energy technologies.
With support from the Inflation Reduction Act, the US is undergoing a solar manufacturing renaissance in 2024, and we look at the role of innovative thin-film technologies in this.
Available land and favorable climate mean that trackers have long been a popular technology in the US solar market. We look at how manufacturers are innovating to make their products suitable for more challenging terrains, as well as resilient against harsh hailstorms and heavy winds.

Other topics in this issue:

  • Standing up for rooftop solar: Companies in Europe are seeing advantage in vertical PV installations, on rooftops and the ground.
  • Longi, ESG and supply chains: We spoke with Longi Green Energy’s chief strategy officer Haimeng Zhang about sustainability and the complexities inherent to navigating global supply chains.
  • Laser focus on degradation: Laser enhanced contact opening, a new process in cell production, promises low cost adoption and improvements in cell performance, meeting requirements for rapid industry adoption.
  • Owning TOPCon: In a crowded PV module market, patent infringement cases are becoming more common. Do they do the industry any good?
  • End of a US solar giant: Charting the fall of SunPower and ongoing challenges in the US residential PV market.
  • Silicon vs. graphite: Group14 is building out a global supply of silicon for battery applications, potentially bypassing the constrained supply of graphite.
