Treasure Islands

This month, pv magazine turns its focus to islands in the energy transition. Within larger markets, island regions are already showing the way: Hawaii is moving forward with some of the most ambitious solar targets in the United States, and community energy models are reshaping the power supply in Spain’s Balearic and Canary Islands.
Other island regions are struggling. There are a lot of obstacles to overcome, including natural disasters, poor access to finance, skills shortages and low demand.

Description

Many of these challenges have practical solutions, as we heard from leading figures including United Nations Under Secretary General Rabab Fatima. The message? Islands, particularly small island developing states, need better financial structures for renewables to thrive. Small can be mighty, and islands are no exception.
Scotland’s Orkney islands have been producing a surplus of renewable energy since 2013, and the region is now looking to green hydrogen production. Nations in the Caribbean are exploring ways to pool demand and better take advantage of their large solar resource, while the island of Montserrat is being touted by scientists from Oxford University as a potential site for geothermal energy and critical materials extraction.

Other topics in this issue:

  • The throes of uncertainty: In the French territory of New Caledonia, solar developers are nervously eyeing the struggling nickel mines that account for much of the region’s energy demand
  • Potential for green lithium: Direct lithium extraction promises greener processing and increased supply, compared to current methods
  • New life for solar panels: 2ndlifesolar explains how it revamps and recycles solar panels
  • Solar harvest in Brazil: Solar provides stable revenue and other benefits for farmers
  • Pillars of solar success: Good quality racking systems are essential for longevity and structural integrity
  • Bright outlook for South Africa: How the formation of a new government could prove transformative for solar
